Family run, the Church family welcomes travelers to ride horses to see annual migration of up to one million wildebeest, big cats, flora, fauna and birdlife. Location

These riding vacations operate in Southwestern Kenya’s Masai Mara, an area of preserved savannah wilderness located along the Tanzanian border in the Great Rift Valley. Named in honor of the Maasai people, travelers visit to see lions, leopards, cheetah, the zebra migrations, wildebeest and more. The Great Migration takes place from July to October.

Safaris Unlimited’s History

The oldest riding safari company in Africa, Safaris Unlimited has long been a family business. It was started in 1971 Tony Church. Tony had a vision that riding a horse with big game, would be the ultimate experience. Now world renowned for its extraordinary experiences, Safaris Unlimited continues to guide travelers into the wilds of Kenya’s Masai Mara led by Tony’s son Gordie.

Food

Professional chefs prepare fresh meals served in the dining tent complete with tables and chairs for elegant meals in camp. Enjoy full breakfasts with coffee, fresh fruit, granola, eggs, toast and more. Lunches may be served ‘alfresco’ with salads, cheeses, cold meats, pizza, pies, fresh bread and wine. Dinners may include appetizers around the campfire, then starters of fresh soup and a main fish or beef, fresh vegetables and lovely light deserts.

Dietary restrictions can be catered for with fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and more. Meals are prepared over open fires by camp chefs and served by waiters.

Accommodations

Stay in the outdoors in comfort in 1920’s stlye chic safari tents (double beds, douvets, cotton sheets, hot showers) on these traditional mobile safaris. Large canvas tents each have a toilet and shower and are privately set in pretty areas usually under a canopy of trees or overlooking a stream. The mosquito-proof tents are simply furnished in traditional safari camping style with double or single beds, carpets and bedside tables. Egyptian cotton sheets, warm feather duvets adorn the beds and hot water bottles are provided for the cool nights. Separate canvas shower and loo units are placed behind each tent.

Activities

Enjoy sundowners amid pristine nature or while watching the wildebeest migration. Go hot air ballooning, on a night game drive, kite surfing or bird watching. There are activities both in and out of the saddle to enjoy. This vacation draws lovers of wildlife and experienced equestrians seeking to explore wide open game country. Daily hours in the saddle vary from 4-8, always with options to explore in a 4×4 safari vehicle for a change of pace.
